You’re Not Lazy. Your Metabolism Is Misfiring.
You wake up tired. You eat reasonably well. You’re not sedentary. But somewhere around 40, your body stopped responding the way it used to — and no one has given you a satisfying explanation for why.
The default answer is usually some version of “that’s just aging.” Eat less. Move more. Sleep better. And when that doesn’t work, the implication — spoken or not — is that you’re not trying hard enough.
Here’s what that explanation leaves out: metabolism is not a fixed trait. It’s a measurable, biological process. And for a significant percentage of adults over 40, that process has become inefficient in ways that have nothing to do with effort.
What Your Body is Actually Burning
Your Resting Metabolic Rate — RMR — is the number of calories your body requires just to keep you alive and functioning at rest. Breathing. Circulation. Organ function. Temperature regulation. All of it has a fuel cost, and that cost varies dramatically from person to person.
Most calorie targets and dietary recommendations are built on population averages. They assume a relatively predictable relationship between your age, height, weight, and how much energy your body actually needs. For many people over 40, that assumption breaks down.
Two people with identical profiles on paper can have RMRs that differ by 300 to 500 calories per day. That gap doesn’t show up in standard lab work. Your doctor isn’t measuring it. And without knowing your actual number, any nutrition or energy plan you follow is built on a guess.
Why This Shows Up as Fatigue
When your metabolism is running inefficiently, your body is working harder than it should to produce energy from the fuel you give it. The output is lower. The demand stays the same. What you feel is persistent, unexplained exhaustion — the kind that isn’t fixed by a full night of sleep or a week of vacation.
It also tends to compound. Metabolic inefficiency disrupts hormonal signaling. Disrupted hormones affect sleep quality. Poor sleep further suppresses metabolic function. By the time most people seek answers, several systems are involved — and treating any one of them in isolation produces limited results.
What Measuring It Actually Looks Like
At 4Core Functional Health, RMR testing is part of our in-clinic Functional Health Assessment. The test itself is straightforward: you breathe into a device for several minutes while at rest, and the equipment measures your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide output. From that data, we calculate exactly how much energy your body is producing and how efficiently it’s using fuel.
Breath analysis is the only method known to science for reliably measuring aerobic metabolism and all the systems involved in it through biomarkers such as VO2 max, metabolic rate, and fat burn. This makes it the cornerstone test for every critical system of our body.
That number, combined with your body composition scan, gives us a picture of what’s actually happening. Not an estimate. Not an average. Your data. And you can also measure, over time, how your RMR is improving (or not improving) based on your exercise, diet, supplements, hormones, etc.

The Difference a Real Number Makes
When you know your actual RMR, the conversation about energy, weight, and fatigue changes entirely. Nutrition targets become precise. Exercise programming can be calibrated to support — rather than further stress — a metabolism that’s already under strain. And the underlying drivers, whether hormonal, inflammatory, or structural, become addressable because they’ve been identified.
Most people who come through our assessment have spent months or years operating on the assumption that how they feel is just the cost of getting older. For most of them, it isn’t. There’s a specific reason, and it’s findable.
If you’re over 40 and you’ve been exhausted without a clear explanation, the answer probably isn’t more discipline. It’s better information.
